Hysterectomy Information
Menopause - Symptoms - Nutritional - Supplements - Information - Womens Health - Natural Products
A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus
and ovaries. Our uterus cradles a fetus from conception to birth and
it also produces the monthly menstrual period. Our ovaries produce
eggs or ova monthly and produce hormones, estrogen and progesterone,
which regulate menstruation, menopause and our sexual well-being.
If a woman has a hysterectomy at any age this immediately launches
her body into the experience of menopause because it disrupts the
body's normal hormonal balance.
Reasons for a Hysterectomy
There are many reasons why a woman would be advised by her doctor to
have a hysterectomy.
1. Fibroids: these are common non-cancerous tumors of the uterus.
They may cause heavy bleeding, pelvic discomfort, pain or pressure
on other organs.
2. Endometriosis: this is a non-cancerous condition in which cells
from the uterine lining grow outside the uterus. This growth occurs
most commonly on the ovaries and fallopian tubes, bladder or bowel.
This causes pain and bleeding during menstruation.
3. Prolapse: as a woman ages the vaginal supports begin to lose
their muscle tone and sag downward or prolapse. As this happens the
bladder and/or rectum may be pulled downward with the uterus. As the
prolapse becomes more serious a woman experiences a heavy or
dragging feeling in the pelvic area and has problems controlling her
bladder and/or bowel functions.
4. Cancer of the uterus or ovary: if cancer occurs in these organs a
hysterectomy is necessary to stop the spread of this disease.
5. Cancer of the cervix: if cancer of the cervix goes undetected and
progresses then a hysterectomy may be the only treatment.
Before you consider having a hysterectomy make sure you explore with
your doctor all the treatment options available for the condition
you have been diagnosed with.
If, after exploring all your options, having a hysterectomy is
the best medical option for you to maintain your health, then
you will need to make sure you take care of the impact this will
have on your body's natural hormone balance. After a hysterectomy your body will function as if
it is in menopause. Therefore taking natural products to maintain your body's natural hormonal balance and health will be essential to a successful recovery.
