Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 40 and 55 years and the
whole process usually takes from two to five years. It is a time of
transition and readjustment for a woman, ending her reproductive
years and beginning a new phase of life.
The term menopause comes from two Greek words that
mean "month" and "to end." This translates as "the end of the
monthlies." The medical definition of menopause is the absence of
menstruation for 12 months.
Menopause symptoms actually begin with the
transitional phase called peri menopause or
pre menopause. Gradually your ovaries cease producing eggs and your
periods become less frequent and eventually stop.
As this phase begins, your estrogen and progesterone
levels begin to decline. Peri menopause can begin to happen as
early as your 30's. This phase can last anywhere from two to fifteen
years, but for most women it lasts about four years, and, typically,
peri menopause begins around age 47.
For some women the perimenopause symptoms can be more intense than actual menopause because, during this period, the levels of estrogen and progesterone
may fluctuate irregularly.
As menstrual periods become irregular, PMS can
become heightened. This is when you start to experience night sweats
and even hot flashes. For some lucky women the symptoms of peri
menopause are more subtle and gradual.
The good news is that when you transition from peri
menopause to true menopause, the PMS symptoms cease because the
estrogen and progesterone levels have lowered and stabilized at a
constant.
Although estrogen levels begin to decline in our
30's, most symptoms of
menopause
probably won't really become noticeable until your mid
to late 40's, a few years before menopause.
